Brigadier General Michael P. Fleming
by Major Michelle Faucher, CIOR PA Committee

In Latvia this summer, representing the US team in the CIOR Military Competition was Brigadier General Michael P. Fleming.  As an Assistant Adjutant General for the state of Florida in the Army National Guard, General Fleming never sits still, he holds a Master of Arts with distinction in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College and a Master of Business Administration from the University of North Florida.  When it comes to “Be all you can be” or Army “Strong”, General Fleming leads the pack.

General Fleming has been a competitor on the US Team for a total of eight years,  spanning from 1990 until now.  He was also a member of the CIOR Civil Military Cooperation Committee from 1998-1999.

“I got involved with CIOR in 1988.  I saw an article about the CIOR Military Competitions program and set a goal to make the US team. Although I trained to try out for the 1988 US team, I suffered a stress fracture and did not attend training camp that year.  My first year to attend training camp was 1990 and I was selected for the team that year.  I was on an international team in 1990 with a Canadian and a Dane,” said General Fleming.

What keeps the General returning year after year?

“In addition to the pride of representing the United States in an
international competition, the US CIOR program provides significant
professional development.  The marksmanship, physical fitness, orienteering,
and leadership skills required by this competition are the same skills
required of US officers in today's security environment.  My hope is that the
US program will be able to expand to allow more qualified officers to attend
the focused professional development training camp.”
