Estonian Reserve Anniversary
2Lt Juan Gonzalez,  Spanish Army Reserve

The history of Estonia is too rich and tormentuous to explain in a few words, but in 1988 the Estonians regained the independence of which they are so proud. Their aim of total integration with the rest of  the western world came with membership in NATO and the EU in 1994.

The Estonian Reserve Officers’ Association was established at the Meegomae Battle School in 1997 and are commerorating their 10th anniversary this year. For a military reservist, a great  way to celebrate is with a shooting competition to verify skills, compete and further develop comradeship.

"Our competition motto is accuracy and speed,” said 2 Lt Kardo Merivald, chairman of the competition. “We try to make our exercises as realistic as possible.”

The 2007 competition drew 184 participants and 46 teams from six countries, and it included pistol, rifle and submachine gun shoots. Participants from Poland, Denmark, Finland, Spain, Latvia and Estonia enjoyed a well-organized event. The team competeition was won by the Estonian Pärnu Single Infantry Battalion and the individual winner was 2nd Lt Oliver Purik of the Estonian “Umpires” team.

Particpants also enjoyed a scenic tour of the city of Tallin, including a guided visit to the old hanseatic city. With such an attractive setting and a succesful event, the organizers expect the shooting competition will attract particpants from more countries in the future.

“We are more than happy to see our friends from allied countries participating,” said Merivald. “I think this is a good way to develop relations and share experiences.”
